CV is the short form for curriculum vitae. This is an outline which has the professional and educational history of a person which is mainly prepared for making job applications. It is the most convenient and flexible ways of making applications. This document will play a significant role in conveying all your details in the best way possible. In general, this document is meant for marketing people. You can use it in “selling” your qualifications, abilities, experience, and skills to the employers. A CV can be structured according to your wish by following the basic framework.
When are CVs used?
- When the employer advertises for a job without specifying the format to be used
- When making a speculative application
- Whenever you have the employer asking for applications that need to be using this format
What should be included in a CV?
A detailed personal CV should include the following details
In general, this will include our address, name, date of birth, email, telephone number, and age. The British CVs do not require a photograph unless you are applying for a job related to acting. However, there are some European countries such as Germany and Belgium which requires one to include a personal photograph. In USA and UK photographs are discouraged as they can contravene the legislation on equal opportunity- it can make it easy for someone to reject your application based on the grounds of age, sex, and ethnicity.
Qualifications and Education
This will include the degree subject and college, plus GCSEs and A-levels or equivalents. You are supposed to mention your grades unless they are very poor.
Under this, you are supposed to use words such as organized, planned and developed. Any organization or firm will require teamwork and be providing quality services to its esteemed customers. Avoid mentioning non-people tasks such as cleaning tables if you are not applying for a job in a bar or restaurant. Additionally, your skills should be related to the job that you are applying for.
Achievements and interests
In this session, you are required to be precise and state your interests in bullet forms. Interests can be separated into different types such as creative and sporting. You are advised to avoid using some of the old boring clichés such as “socializing with friends.” You should provide evidence of any employability skills like planning, organizing, team working negotiating and persuading.
Some of the usual skills that you should mention include computing, driving, and languages. A skill based CV will work best for you especially if you have relevant skills.
This section can be omitted during the application stage. They should be provided only when they are requested. Every person is expected to have two referees, one from the employer and another one which is academic.
